Our
British Milk Sheep farm
In
April of 2004, Rosy and Alain Bellemare buy from Eric and Elizabeth
Bzkot, an Ontarian sheep producer, 30 British
Milk Sheep Ewes and make their début in sheep breeding
business. They hope to build a herd and to one day milk these
dairy ewes and transform the milk into cheese... If God wants
it, if the CPTAQ wants it, if the Department of the Environment
wants it, if the MAPAQ wants it, and if finances allow it... It
ain't always easy to be a farmer these days!
The
year 2005 will be painful. The ewes start to lamb too early in
the season on the first day of February in a sub zero barn...
The temperature goes up to - 28 C on that day. During the first
two weeks of February, we lose one out of two lambs reared. Assessment
in spring; 8 ewes died during the winter because of moulds in
the hay and probably because of our lack of experience to locate
in advance the animals giving the signs of an imminent problem
of health, 2 died following complications with the lambing, 35
lambs and ewe-lambs died during the cold Siberian weeks of February.
It ain't always easy to be a farmer these days!
February
2006, we have 60 ewes in lamb and lambing has already started...
We cross our fingers hoping that the abnormally mild winter that
we had this year will save our little one to be born... For a
visit of the farm, please contact us...
